Portrait
Éva Duda is one of the most energetic figures of Hungary’s young generation of choreographers. Her works exhibit the use of dynamic and organic forms of movement and a series of suggestive images composed with harmonic structure. Her choreographies are characterized by dynamic and unexpected changes from total stillness to extremely energetic, fast and complicated motifs. She blends the different elements of contemporary and modern techniques, often using street dances, various authentic folkdances or martial arts as sources of inspiration.
In terms of subjects, her performances always roll around the human; she is mainly interested in exploring and examining the laws of our inner processes, the power relations and emotional states of closed communities. Her performances are associated with unique visuality and special lighting plans. Her pieces are often labelled lyrical, sensual and “following no trends”.
As a freelance artist, she works on her own projects with her changing team, and is often invited by professional companies and theatres as a choreographer. Diversity and innovation are equally important for her. Besides her independent choreographic work, she persistently cooperates with artistic communities, and as a dancer she collaborates with artists from the same field.
Beyond physical skills, she expects herself and her colleagues to be open, creative, aware and persistent. Composer Péter Kunert is her constant partner.
“…since it “has no laws”, contemporary dance is a diverse and extremely receptive, constantly changing trend interacting with other arts, serving artistic communication and having no limits in terms of genre and language. Consequently, it is created by open, curious and free people.”
Upon completing her studies in Hungary and abroad, she graduated as a choreographer from the Hungarian Dance Academy in 2001. Her initial shorter pieces were soon followed by longer performances, several of which won Hungarian and international prizes and awards (Paris International Dance Competition, Stuttgart Solo Dance Competition, Japan – Hamamatsu: Hungarian Day, Poland’s Ciesny Festival etc.). In 2005, she was awarded the Zoltán Imre Prize, one of the most significant recognitions in Hungary’s dance scene.
Due to her openness and experimental attitude, she is regularly invited to work in musical theatre productions ranging from operas through movement theatre genres to musicals. She regularly works with directors like Enikő Eszenyi, Miklós Gábor Kerényi, János Szikora and Péter Forgács, and frequently makes choreographies for the monumental performances of the Budapest Operetta Theatre and the Szeged Open-Air Festival.
